Engine Management Lights and MOTs?

This is a question we get asked regularly - will my car fail its MOT with its engine management light on? The answer depends on the year the vehicle was registered and whether it is a petrol or diesel.

A petrol vehicle (not more than 8 passenger seats) with the engine management light illuminated will fail the MOT if the vehicle was registered on or after 1st July 2003.

A diesel vehicle with its engine management light illuminated will fail its MOT if it was registered on or after the 1st July 2008.

If the vehicle is dual fuel (gas/ or bi fuel) with its engine management light illuminated it will fail its MOT if it was registered on or after the 1st July 2008.

Hopefully this will help clear up some of the confusion!
